Day Trip to the High Atlas Mountains & Oukaimeden

Our Morocco birding tour begins with a scenic drive into the High Atlas Mountains, heading towards Oukaimeden, situated at an elevation of 2600 meters. As we ascend, the cultivated fields will present a mix of resident species including the Southern Grey Shrike, Little Owl, Sardinian Warbler, Spotless Starling, Moroccan Magpie, Moussier’s Redstart, and House Bunting. These species are commonly found in the area and provide an excellent introduction to Morocco’s diverse birdlife.

As we continue to climb, the rocky slopes will offer opportunities to search for the elusive Blue Rock Thrush and the endemic Levaillant’s Green Woodpecker. Upon reaching the ski resort at Oukaimeden, we will check the snowline for the striking African Crimson-winged Finch. The high-altitude environment is also home to other notable species such as Rock Sparrow, Black Wheatear, Alpine Chough, and the Atlas Horned Lark, making this a prime location for birdwatching enthusiasts.

Marrakech - Atlas Mountains - Oukaimeden

Meet and welcome you in Marrakech, we will drive up into the High Atlas Mountains and visit Oukaimeden (2600m). As we drive along the cultivated fields, we should find a good mix of resident species such as Southern Grey Shrike, Little Owl, Sardinian Warbler, Spotless Starling, Moroccan Magpie, Moussier’s Redstart and House Bunting.

Slightly higher up, among the rocky slopes, we will search for Blue Rock Thrush and the endemic Levaillant’s Green Woodpecker. When we reach the ski resort at Oukaimeden, we will check the snowline for the handsome African Crimson-winged Finch.
